The show featured work from the seven disciplines within LSAD and the branding is based around this concept. The show featured work from the seven... http://www.ceolryder.com/6-Great-Historical-Speeches http://www.ceolryder.com/following/ceolryder.com/6-Great-Historical-Speeches Wed, 22 Jun 2011 17:41:56 +0000 Ceol Ryder 1624024 Awarded the Limerick Institute of Technology Permanent Collection Purchase Award With ‘language’ as a starting point I decided to look at effective use of language and linguistic techniques in some famous and influential speeches throughout history. I chose to look at the speeches individually but also to compare and contrast them with each other. The six speeches chosen have a number of connections between them and this adds to the overall presentation of the project and the coherence of the finished piece. The finished project consists of a series of posters analysing and comparing six great historical speeches given by Daniel O’Connell, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama. The project was presented in the form of six double-sided A2 posters and two single-sided posters. I decided that the best way to explore the issue was to create my own micronation which I could then use to look at the various aspects of statehood. My fake country was created as a tongue-in-cheek look at the criteria needed for statehood and how these criteria could be fulfilled. It also examines the necessary requirements for a country to be considered “real” in the popular imagination. This is shown in the attempt to create a national beer and airline for my country. I chose to do mine on a hitchhiking race that I took part in. The 'Race to Riga' was a hitchhiking race in which teams of two raced from Faro in the south of Portugal across Europe to Riga in Latvia.
